California-Asia Business Council (Cal-Asia) is proud to present its 2006 New Silk Road Award to Former Secretary of State George P. Shultz for his many contributions to California-Asia business at the 12th Annual Asia Night gala on June 8.
We are recognizing Secretary Shultz for the constant and powerful work he has done over many years and in many career capacities to build a solid structural basis for US-Asia trade and commerce: In academics, as a university professor, dean, and distinguished fellow at Stanford's Hoover Institution; in government, as head of the US Office of Management and Budget, Secretary of Labor, Secretary of the Treasury, and Secretary of State; and in industry, as President of Bechtel Corp., and advisor to global corporations.
His pioneering work on the US-China relationship helped pave the way for today's collegial bilateral relationship; his work in Southeast Asia has augmented US commercial ties with that area. He strengthened the US relationships with many countries in Asia, including South Korea and the Philippines, which he helped to transform into thriving democracies. Even today, as one of the revered "elder statesmen" of our era, Secretary Shultz can be found advising executives at high-tech venture-capital conferences on emerging Asian business opportunities.
